Acquisitions

by Adam on December 23, 2014

Continuing in our spate of 2013 foodtech acquisitions, OpenTable recently announced an $11.5MM acquisition of QuickCue, a restaurant provider of management services for dine-in guests. http://press.opentable.com/releasedetail.cfm?releaseid=814165 I’m particularly interested in the news because OpenTable is establishing itself as one go-to acquirer of early-stage companies in the restaurant-tech space. It’s good news for any company trying […]

by Adam on December 16, 2013

I suppose it has something to do with the holiday season or the end of the year that money is flying around so freely. Last week, we had the announcement about the E La Carte partnership with Applebee’s, and today Sysco announced a deal to buy US Foods for $3.5 billion (and yes, that is […]

GrubHub and Seamless Merger Complete

by Adam on August 10, 2013

Earlier this year, GrubHub and Seamless announced a merger that would make them the largest provider of online restaurant marketing services in the country. I stop short of saying deliver because, contrary to popular belief, neither Seamless nor GrubHub provides delivery as a service. Needless to say, the opportunity in the restaurant marketing space is […]

Losing Your Waze

by Adam on May 12, 2013

While this post coincides somewhat nicely with the rumors circling that Facebook may be in talks to acquire the popular social traffic mapping app, Waze, it’s both a coincidence and a departure from that aspect of the tech media reporting. My interest in the company is far more fundamental and wasn’t quite apparent to me […]

For those of you who missed out, here is the news from a more official source: http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/digital/retailing/article/56575-amazon-buys-goodreads.html What fun! So Amazon […]

The Big Business of Food

by Adam on February 3, 2013

In looking at the evolution of the food space, especially as it relates to the technology space, there’s a lot that can be gained by finding analogies to similar business ecosystems that have come before. These analogies help to explain and map the opportunity for smaller companies against well-entrenched incumbents who seem to have a […]

OpenTable Acquires Foodspotting for $10MM

by Adam on January 29, 2013

In the second (of perhaps more to come) food M&A deal this year, the user-generated food photo-sharing site Foodspotting.com was acquired by Opentable for $10MM. I’m sure everyone is familiar with Opentable, they were one of the first big tech disruptors in the food space that did something, making the process of booking a restaurant table seamless […]
